We offer beginning and intermediate language courses online. Indiana University students, students from other colleges or universities, guest students, and high school students are welcome to enroll in these courses.
No permission is required to enroll in our online language classes, but we recommend students review the information below to know what to expect.
Online courses give you flexibility, allowing you to adapt the learning process to the demands of a busy schedule. Our instructors are always available to help with any challenges you might have—do not hesitate to contact them whenever you might need anything.
Keep in mind that the online courses we offer are every bit as challenging as our regular courses: you will have to dedicate as much time and work as you normally do for each in-class credit hour. Even though the course is online, we do require you to learn how to speak the language. For this reason, it is mandatory that you be present during virtual classroom time.
Skills: As in all of our language courses, the online French and Italian programs focus on developing your listening, speaking, reading, and writing competencies.
Format: These courses are entirely online. You will not need to be physically present on campus in order to take these classes.
Resources: You will need to have access to a computer with a microphone, headphones, a video camera and highspeed internet.
Schedule: Since it is online, the class requires you to work independently and follow a very structured syllabus. Each day, you will be involved in a variety of online tasks such as reading, listening, completing exercises, posting writing assignments, and recording responses online.
Once a week during the virtual classroom time (or twice a week during the shorter summer sessions), you will meet with your instructor and a small number of classmates on Zoom. The instructor will also be available for online office hours twice a week.
For any OPEN Program or non-IU student registering for an online course with FRIT: please make sure you are admitted to IU in the Online Foreign Language Program (code UDIV0/FLANUGDEND) to ensure you will pay the lowest available tuition rates.
