Departmental Travel & Research Grants

Graduate student research & travel grants

Each semester students can apply for funds to help pay for research expenses and travel to give papers at professional conferences, ranging from graduate student conferences at other U.S. universities to international conferences abroad. These grants are also supported by our generous donors through the Young and Gravit Funds for French, the Michael Berkvam Graduate Student Fund for French/Francophone Studies, and the Olga Ragusa Fund for Modern Italian Studies.

Albert Valdman Graduate Student Fund

Twice a year, doctoral students in French Linguistics may apply for grants from the Albert Valdman Graduate Student Fund to help pay for research-related travel, equipment, or other expenses related to their dissertation projects.

Merit awards for graduate students

Each spring, the faculty select graduate students who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement to receive merit awards at our annual April student awards ceremony. At this event we also reward the most effective associate instructors (who are also graduate students) with departmental teaching awards.

The Peter Cannings award is given annually to a student in French Linguistics, the Grace P. Young awards are given to students in both French Linguistics and French/Francophone Studies, and the Olga Ragusa award is given to an excellent student of Italian.
