Fellowships

Fine points to consider when applying for year-long fellowships

Be sure to carefully read the information regarding year-long fellowships, to avoid any unpleasant surprises. Three points to consider when considering your financial needs:

  1. Note carefully whether fee remissions are included. Often, they are not, as it is presupposed that you will be enrolling in G901 throughout the term of the fellowship.
  2. Some external awards do not provide health insurance. Be sure to check on this.
  3. Be aware that many awards require that you be officially nominated to candidacy for eligibility.

Besides the year-long fellowships available through the College and the Graduate School, there are many other awards available. The University Graduate School website lists several under External Awards, and your advisors and colleagues may know of others. Many organizations and conferences also offer funding for travel and research.
