The Department offers two Masters degrees for those interested in French language teaching in high schools, community colleges, or small colleges that don’t require a PhD. The residential Master of Arts in French Instruction (MAFI) is a two-year program designed for full-time students with an undergraduate degree or significant undergraduate studies in French. The Master of Arts in Teaching French (MAT) is a fully online degree created through collaboration with other IU campuses and administered by IU Online. It is geared towards current high school teachers of French and was just launched in January 2021. Please read below for more information on both programs.
French Instruction
M.A. in French Instruction
The Master of Arts in French Instruction (MAFI) degree is designed for graduate students who are preparing for a career in teaching French at the high school level or at small colleges.
You can tailor the M.A. coursework to your particular needs and interests. In this two-year program, the M.A. in French Instruction includes work in French language, literature, civilization, pedagogy, and applied linguistics.
The MAFI degree does not include state teacher certification. If you would like information on how to combine a certification program with the MAFI, you should consult with an advisor in the School of Education.
For more information about the MAFI degree, please contact one of our Directors of Graduate Study: Professor Kevin Rottet, interim director Professor Jeffrey Lamontagne or Professor Alison Calhoun.

Online M.A.T. in French
The online MAT in French combines courses in foreign language pedagogy, French/Francophone literature and culture, and French linguistics and ends with a capstone project in which students incorporate their knowledge into a high school curriculum or pursue research related to teaching. The MAT is offered as a collaboration among IU Bloomington, IU East, IUPUI, IU Northwest, and IU Southeast. Admission to the program and class registration is handled through IU Online, and we encourage all questions to go through that program. However, administrative questions related to IUB course work may be directed to our Graduate Student Services Coordinator, Miki Weisstein, and academic questions related to IUB course work may be directed to Professor Kevin Rottet, Director of Graduate Studies and liaison to IU Online for this program. During the Fall 2024 semester, please contact Professor Jeffrey Lamontagne, Interim Director.
