French Opportunities
Engaging course topics
Some of our culture courses at the 200-level are taught in English and accessible to all, while our upper-level courses (300-400) are all taught in French (language, culture, literature, film, linguistics, etc). Some topics include:
- Good War, Bad War: Resisting the Nazis, Occupying Algeria
- Cajun and Creole Louisiana
- Heroines in French Theatre
- Media Studies in the Francophone World
- Contemporary France: cinema and culture
- The Politics of Women Writers
- Business French
- Introduction to French Linguistics
Extracurricular activities
Our students engage in many fun activities outside of the classroom. Some activities include:
- Breton folk-dancing
- A French, African, or Québécois film
- A poetry reading by a Senegalese author
- Exploring holiday traditions around France
- Tasting cheese or making crêpes
- Showcasing your hobbies and passions in a French talent show
- Conversation Tables with French Club or with our student-run intermediate/advanced club, Les Chevaliers
Indiana University residential programs
Some of our students choose to live in a living-learning center to enhance their college experience.
- HLS Living-Learning Center – a multi-lingual dorm with activities exploring world cultures
- Collins Living-Learning Center – an artistic atmosphere with international guests in the heart of campus
Study abroad in one of our overseas programs
Many of our students elect to participate in overseas study. You can choose to study in a variety of locations.
- Aix-en-Provence, city of the painter Cézanne and novelist Zola (semester or year)
- Three different Indiana University co-sponsored programs in Paris, the City of Lights (semester or summer)
- A business-focused program in Rouen, in historic Normandy
- A semester-long program in Rennes, in beautiful Brittany
Academic honors + awards
Our department offers a variety of scholarships and awards. Some include:
- Departmental academic prizes
- Membership in the national French Honor Society, Pi Delta Phi
- Pi Delta Phi summer scholarship
- Cote or Leake scholarship for study in Aix-en-Provence
