Course Description

In-depth and discussion-rich analysis of specific movements, topics, or authors of Italian literature. Course content and focus vary according to time periods, genres, themes, and cultural questions. Taught in Italian. May be repeated with different topics for up to 12 credit hours.

Creative minds of the early modern periods did not always perceive the kind of divisions between arts that we see know. Sculptors and painters were also poets too, and poets could be inspired by visual arts. In this interdisciplinary class, we will examine significant works of art from early modern Italy, and we will read literary works by Alberti, Lucrezia Tornabuoni, Poliziano, Michelangelo, Bronzino, Marino, Bartoli, and others. Conducted in Italian.
