Course Description

VT: French Literary Classics in Comics and Film
Prerequisite: F250, F265, equivalent or consent of department.

This course will introduce students to French literary classics through their adaptations in popular media. While reading 'the classics' may seem like a daunting task, many have been adapted in more accessible formats like comics (bande dessinée) and film. Through analyses and comparisons of bandes dessinées like Jacques Ferrandez's adaptation of Albert Camus' L'Étranger, or the cinematic adaptation of Gustave Flaubert's Madame Bovary by Claude Chabrol, to excerpts of the original text, students will get an overview of the greats of French literature, how these works have been interpreted in popular media and their place in contemporary French society.
