Topic: Exploring in-betweenness in the Francophone world

What defines places and spaces of transition? What does it mean to live in a suspended state of in-between? This course investigates the ways in which transitional environments, such as migration or exile, have an impact on fictional characters in Francophone novels and films. What are the effects of this "in-between” on their self-perception and their identity? Through close analysis and discussion of the works, students will examine how identity can become fragmented, reshaped, or reimagined in response to the “in-between”, and ultimately how one can make meaning in spaces that feel temporary or unstable. This course therefore offers students the opportunity to think critically and develop a better understanding of how physical and psychological environments influence the ways individuals view themselves and others.
