French

AY 2024-25 was a dynamic and productive year for the FRIT French Language Program. We welcomed eight new Associate Instructors of French from France, Kenya, Ghana, and the United States. The dual-credit high school Advance College Project also welcomed two new instructors, Mary Currier-Ramsey and Bryce Williamson, who will implement our second-year French language and culture curriculum at Ben Davis and Mishawaka High Schools, respectively. We hosted groups of French students and their instructors from Ben Davis High School, Seven Oaks Classical School, and Center Grove High School for campus visits during spring semester. During these visits students had the opportunity to observe language and literature courses, learn about our degree programs and co-curricular activities, and meet members of the FRIT department.

French Associate Instructors Arnaud Le Bihan and Madison Morgan coordinated our French Club, proposing a diverse selection of cultural activities for our French students and campus community. Highlights included a francophone comics festival, a celebration of Notre Dame Cathedral’s re-opening in collaboration with scholarly experts, Professors Liz Hebbard and Diane Reilly, and a visit to the Eskenazi Museum of Art to view and discuss the first monographic exhibition of Blanche Hochedé-Monet in the United States. April saw a series of events related to Le Comte de Monte Cristo, organized by FRIT graduate students and faculty. Students attended a screening of the 2024 film adaptation by IU Cinemas, as well as academic discussion of Dumas’ original work over lunch.

A new second-year textbook program (Perspectives 1e, Vista Higher Learning) was successfully piloted in FRIT-F265 (Accelerated Second-Year French) following an extensive review and selection process including contributions from the spring 2024 “Methods of Teaching College French” course cohort and the ACP dual-credit teachers. FRIT-F200 and F250 will adopt the new text in fall 2025. Director of Language Instruction, Erin Candeias attended the first annual French for All Summer Institute on behalf of our French programs in Madison, Wisconsin. There, she received training on developing French for International Relations coursework which will serve to inform future career-oriented curricular development in the basic sequence.

  • On February 7th, the French and Italian programs together sponsored a Career Night for our undergrads. In addition to enjoying games and refreshments, guests were able meet (virtually or in person) four French alumni in various stages of their careers: Sarah Panfil (French BA, 2018), an English professor at the EFREI Engineering School near Paris; Olivia Houston (French Certificate, 2017), a litigation attorney in Washington, DC; Celina Jaffe (French BA, 2008), formerly of the French Embassy and currently Associate Director of IU’s Center for the Study of Global Change; Jenna Satterthwaite (French BA, 2004), novelist and literary agent. We would like to thank our inspiring alumni guests for their insightful comments and our undergraduate volunteers for their help with the program!
