Course Description

We will read six short French novels from the 18th and 19th centuries, written by men and women, featuring exotic—and often erotic—heroines and/or heroes: Montesquieu’s Lettres persanes (1721), Mme de Graffigny’s Lettres d’une Péruvienne (1747), Voltaire’s L’Ingénu (1767), Chateaubriand’s Atala (1801), Mme de Duras’s Ourika (1823), and Mérimée’s Colomba (1840).

Two in-class exams and one take-home paper with rewrite.
