Jean Bodin's De la démonomanie des sorciers is often considered by historians as the inaugurator of the particular late-sixteenth and early seventeenth-century European trend for demonological writings that married classical and medieval inheritances with humanist approaches and a certain amount of empirical discussion. These writings, of course, accompanied the much-documented increase in prosecution, indeed persecution, of so-called witches in the period.
