VT: GENRES IN ITALIAN CINEMAIn this advanced Italian course, which meets twice a week, we will explore contemporary Italian culture through the lens of cinema, with a particular focus on film genres. The course will examine how Italian filmmakers have reimagined and reinvented these genres, giving rise to internationally recognized styles known as all'italiana (“Italian style”). Italian cinema is renowned for its ability to absorb international genres, reshape them, and then export these innovations back to the world, profoundly influencing global cinema and even shaping American film traditions. Throughout the course, we will analyze how Italian directors have reworked genres such as the western, horror, comedy, and the detective story (to name a few), crafting new cinematic languages that continue to influence filmmaking worldwide. Each selected film, representing a different genre, will also serve as a lens through which we will explore the deep interconnections between culture, history, and tradition within the Italian context.
