- Course Description
Prerequisite: F250, F265, equivalent or consent of department.
Note: COLL (CASE) A&H Breadth of Inquiry creditThis course explores the idea of FrenchISHness, reflecting the evolution and constant redefinition of who and what is considered “French.” We will engage with a diverse array of materials, including literary texts, films, and media events such as the Paris Olympics opening ceremony, to question how Frenchness has been represented, performed, and challenged. By examining these cultural artifacts, we will explore how race, nationality, and belonging are constructed and deconstructed not just in literature, but in popular and global media as well. The course also tackles the new set of adjectives used to refer to artistic production in French (francophone, monde, transnationale), encouraging students to critically deconstruct these labels and uncover the complex meanings they hold across different media.
This 300-level course offers students a dynamic introduction to French and Francophone studies, equipping them with the critical tools to analyze texts, films, and media, while sharpening their ability to think analytically, write persuasively, and engage with complex cultural debates in French.
