Course Description

Joint-offered with MSCH-C 793

This class examines the world-famous tradition of Italian comics from its origins to the present. We will have an introductory session in which we will cover the language of comics in general. We will then examine significant texts from all periods of modern Italian history - starting from rare comics from the 1910s, to comics of the Fascist era, key comics from the Bonelli publishing powerhouse, crime comics (like Diabolik), and modern independent comics and graphic novels.

Class discussions will be in English. All readings will be available in Italian and English. No knowledge of Italian required.
