If you are interested in gaining a better understanding of the structure of the French language, would like to explore how speakers of other languages acquire French, or if you are curious about what distinguishes different varieties of French, the French Linguistics program at Indiana University is perfect for you.
Our small but distinguished faculty bring to Indiana University their expertise in phonology, syntax, and semantics, and head very active research programs that explore, for example, how speakers of English acquire subtle meaning differences in French, the syntactic structure of Old Occitan, the effects of language contact on French as spoken in Louisiana or Bretagne, or the phonological and grammatical structures of Québec French and Picard.
