What is classic Italian cinema? How does it relate to contemporary Italian films? What roles have women played in the making of Italian national cinema throughout the decades both on and off screen? This course provides an overview of important movements, films, and directors across the history of Italian cinema, with an emphasis on the sociopolitical contexts and aesthetic-artistic choices used to represent the condition and desires of Italian women from the post-war period through today.
