Course Description

Topic: The Best Italian Films of the New Millenium

Optional film showings on Tuesday evenings. Students must view films before Thursday's class meeting.

The objective of this course is to gain a better understanding of the cultural and social developments that have shaped contemporary Italian life, seen through twelve compelling films. This survey will also study how new Italian Cinema has represented other cultures, specific historical moments like the cultural and sexual revolution of the Sixties, terrorism, and various other topics including: euthanasia, legalization of drugs and the death penalty. Each film will be analyzed for its artistic merits and will be accompanied by one critical essay provided by the instructor.
