Alumni & Giving

Support from alumni

Donations from alumni support awards for our undergraduate and graduate students, including merit-based awards given at our annual April student awards ceremony. Donations also provide need-based travel grants for graduate students to attend conferences, an essential component of their professional development.

We count on donations to support our French Club and Circolo Italiano extracurricular activities and to help fund visits by guest speakers. Study abroad is also funded by generous friends and alumni of the department: the Hofstadter, Bentley, Valdman, Ragusa, and Gravit funds have all been used to support our students who study or conduct research abroad. Other funds, such as the MacClintock, Cannings, and Hyde funds, support awards for outstanding students.

Alumni spotlight: Iris (Grossman) Amice

Iris Amice (née Grossman) graduated with a B.A. in French in 1994. After graduation, she taught French to children in Indianapolis at the elementary level. She then received a scholarship to study translation at the Monterey Institute of International Studies in California. From there, a scholarship to pursue course work at the Institut Superieure d’Interpretation et de Traduction took her to Paris—and she never turned back.
