The French Club welcomes all those interested in speaking French and in learning about French and Francophone cultures. Our Acting Director of Language Instruction in French, Dr. Kate Bastin, serves as French Club faculty director, and she is assisted each year by a graduate student coordinator. The aims of the French Club are both to offer enrichment activities for current IU French students and to expose the broader IU and Bloomington community to aspects of French and francophone culture. Like us on Facebook to get the latest updates!
Join the French Club for conversation nights, film nights, and cultural activities this semester! The conversation table is an opportunity to practice your French by discussing various topics over drinks and snacks, learning more about French and francophone culture in the process. Each semester we also have a film series focused on a particular theme. In addition, we schedule special events focused on some aspect of the culture of France or other French-speaking regions and countries around the world.
If you'd like more information about the French Club and its activities, send your questions by email to the coordinator, Laura Demsey.
Each year, we celebrate Mardi Gras with a French Club party, sometimes joining forces with the Circolo Italiano, as this last big bash before the Catholic period of Lent is important in both cultural traditions. Each year in the Spring we also host a French Talent Show where students compete to win prizes by showcasing their talents (in French) in music, short theatrical skits, poetry readings, or dance of a certain French-speaking area. The last few years, we have hosted a night of dance from Brittany, the danse bretonne, in October, where students learn the dance and enjoy food from the region. Come be part of our French Club traditions!
